1,000 Children Received a Sweeter Dreams Bed of Their Own in 2020
We are celebrating the delivery of our 1,000th bed in 2020 to a Wake County child who did not have a bed of their own! The COVID Crisis has disproportionally impacted the 38,500 Wake County households living in poverty, who cannot afford basic household needs like furniture for their homes or beds for their children.
Over 6,000 children in Wake County are estimated to be sleeping on floors, sharing beds with others and not getting the sleep required for healthy development. The Green Chair Project provides beds for children ages 3+ and cribs for children 0-3, are provided through our Sweeter Dreams Bed Program, which works to provide a good night’s sleep to every child in need.
“The health benefits of a good night’s sleep are now more important than ever as we work to keep our community safe and healthy during this pandemic,” notes Jackie Craig, Executive Director. “Our children deserve a restful night in a bed of their own.”
Children that are recipients of beds through The Sweeter Dreams program receive a new twin size mattress and frame as well as bedding and a pillow. The crib sets provided to infant program recipients include sheets and instructions for safe sleep in both English and Spanish.
Since March of 2020, The Green Chair Project has worked to cover the “last mile” by partnering with many local nonprofits. Each bed or crib delivered has been bundled with additional critical resources including:
- Nutritious non-perishable food staples
- Prepared family style meals
- Hygiene items
- Face masks
- Cleaning supplies
- Face masks
- School supplies and books
“While not in school, students have lost community connections to critical services,” said Craig “and so we have partnered with other organizations in our community to bring these vital services directly to the children in our community who need them the most.”

How important is it to sleep in a bed?
Every child deserves a good night’s sleep to help them learn, grow and thrive. We know that a good night’s sleep translates into improved learning, behavior, heart health, attention span, weight and immune system function. In addition, it results in improved attendance and performance in school. The Green Chair Project is on a mission to provide a bed for EVERY child in need.
